The Well is a vibrant mixed-use development in the heart of downtown Toronto. Of the many spectacular features that it boasts, the 8 million-litre Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank below parking level six is an engineering feat that provides efficient, reliable, and resilient heating and cooling to the surrounding community. The TES is a thermal battery – it charges at night, during periods of low demand, and discharges during the day, when the congested Toronto grid needs the most relief. The battery operates in both heating and cooling mode and leverages another innovative infrastructure feature of Enwave’s – Deep Lake Water Cooling, which pull cold water from the bottom of Lake Ontario to provide cooling to buildings. The Well TES uses a closed loop system to circulate water with ‘SoCool’, a rust inhibiting solution that allows water to be stored colder than freezing, thereby maximizing its cooling potential, and through a series of heat exchangers, heat is transferred to a second closed loop system that feeds the buildings within The Well community. The Well is connected to Enwave’s Hot Water distribution network which is incorporating an increasing number of low-carbon generating assets to provide low-carbon hot water to Enwave customers with net-zero aspirations.
