Winners in 2017

Salaspils, Latvia
“Salaspils Siltums” has improved the efficiency of its district heating system and heat sources since 2010. The company fully reconstructed its heat network and installed high-efficiency gas boilers. A woodchip boiler house was added to increase energy independence and renewable energy use. The boiler was later upgraded with a flue gas condenser, automatic controls and remote data monitoring. The company also follows the ISO 50001 energy management standard to optimize resource consumption.

Modernization
Gothenburg, Sweden
The Stena Danica became the first ship in regular service to connect to a district heating network while docked in Gothenburg. The project replaces its previous oil-fired boilers with district heating, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 500 tonnes per year. It also cuts SOx and NOx emissions by more than 90% and reduces local noise. The innovative system enables daily connection of a moving passenger ship to the district heating grid. The project was developed through cooperation between Göteborg Energi, Stena Line and the City of Gothenburg.

Out of the box
Lusail City, Qatar
Marafeq Qatar was created by Qatari Diar to provide district cooling, central gas supply and waste management in Lusail City. The district cooling network is being developed to meet a projected demand of over 100,000 TR. Its development follows European district heating and cooling standards and expertise. The system uses multiple cooling plants to supply customers across the growing city. Marafeq aims to deliver efficient district cooling while supporting knowledge exchange and sustainable urban development.

New scheme
Tartu, Estonia
The Tartu district heating and cooling system evolved from a Soviet-era network into an efficient and modern energy system. A biomass and peat CHP plant was commissioned in 2009, followed by network expansion and district cooling development. In 2016, Tartu launched the first district cooling network in the Baltics and Eastern Europe. Smart meters were also installed for 72% of customers to improve energy management. The systems continue to support Tartu’s environmental strategy and sustainable growth.

Winner Expansion
Laguna de Duero, Spain
The Torrelago district in Laguna de Duero includes 31 buildings and 1,488 homes housing over 4,000 residents. The project combines building façade retrofitting with modernization of the district heating system. External insulation is expected to reduce building energy demand by 40%. Three biomass boilers and a microcogeneration system further increase renewable and efficient energy use. Overall, the project aims to achieve energy savings of around 50%.
